Transfer DVCPRO to DVD or Digital Files

Think of DVCPRO tapes as MiniDV's older brother. They're not as large as DVCAM tapes, but they are larger than MiniDV tapes, even though they utilize the same DV format. While the DVCPRO format provides the same high quality video as the more common MiniDV format, the larger tape makes it more robust and less prone to errors or dropouts. However these tapes can be difficult to view or share without professional equipment. For this reason many people have their DVCPRO tapes transferred to digital files or to DVD.

DVDs provide several advantages. They take up less room, last longer, and make it easier to jump to a particular section of the video when you are looking for a particular video clip.

One tricky thing about DVCPRO tapes is the video can be formatted in several different ways. We only work with DVCPRO 25 and DVCPRO 50 formats which are the most common and came out in the late 1990s and early 2000s. We support both PAL formatted (European video standards) and NTSC formatted (US standards) video in these formats. However the same video cassette can contain video formatted DVCPRO P, or DVCPRO HD. These higher end formats are less common and were mainly used in high-end sports and news gathering. Unfortunately, the only way to tell the type of video on the tape is by playing back the tape. If you aren't sure what format of DVCPRO video you have, we're happy to review your tape and let you know if we can transfer it, or provide you with a referral to a high-end post house that can.
